Ofloxacin/dexamethasone is a prescription medicine that combines two active ingredients. Ofloxacin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. Dexamethasone is a steroid that reduces swelling, redness and itching. The mix is used for infections of the eye or ear that also cause inflammation. It is not meant for viral infections or for use beyond the doctorβs instructions.
The antibiotic part, ofloxacin, targets bacteria and helps clear the infection. The steroid part, dexamethasone, calms inflammation and makes symptoms easier to tolerate. Together they can shorten the course of irritation and improve comfort. You should not rely on this medicine if you are unsure whether your symptoms are due to a bacterial infection.
Use exactly as prescribed. In eye form, wash hands, tilt the head and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Put the prescribed number of drops into that pocket. Close the eye and wipe away any excess. In ear form, lie on your side or tilt the head. Place the drops into the ear canal as directed. Keep the head tilted for a few minutes. Do not squeeze the bottle or touch the tip to surfaces. Do not wear contact lenses unless a clinician says it is safe.
Do not use if you are allergic to fluoroquinolones, dexamethasone, or any ingredient. Avoid if the infection is fungal or viral and not yet diagnosed. Use with caution in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use if the tympanic membrane is perforated for ear drops unless your doctor says itβs okay. Tell your clinician about other medicines you take to prevent interactions.
Common effects include stinging, burning, or a temporary metallic taste after application. Eyelid irritation, blurred vision or eye discomfort can occur. In the ear form you may notice a mild fullness or itching. Rarely, severe allergic reactions or persistent eye or ear pain can happen. If you see swelling, redness spreading, or pus, seek care promptly.
Store at room temperature away from heat and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed. Do not share drops with others. Check the expiration date and discard if it is past date or if the bottle looks damaged. Use fresh drops as directed and finish the full course if advised by your doctor.
Many patients value the quick relief of inflammation and clearer vision or hearing after starting treatment. Some report a mild sting at first, which usually passes. The key is applying the drops as prescribed and reporting any worsening symptoms or signs of infection that do not improve.
